Prison Island

Prison Island, also known as Changuu Island, is a small island located off the coast of Stone Town, the historic center of Zanzibar City, Tanzania. It was originally intended to serve as a prison for rebellious slaves in the late 19th century during the Arab slave trade era. However, the prison was never used for its intended purpose and instead became a quarantine station for the British colonial government in the early 20th century. One of the main attractions of Prison Island is its population of giant Aldabra tortoises, which were originally brought to the island as a gift from the Seychelles in the late 19th century. The tortoises are now the island's most famous residents and can be seen roaming freely around the island.
