Gombe Stream National Park is situated in the Kigoma Region of western Tanzania, bordering Lake Tanganyika and the Democratic Republic of the Congo. It covers an area of approximately 52 square kilometres (20 square miles). The park is characterized by dense tropical rainforest, steep hills, and valleys, with streams and waterfalls flowing through the forest. The park's terrain is rugged and hilly, with elevations ranging from 770 meters (2,530 feet) to 1,500 meters (4,920 feet) above sea level. Gombe Stream National Park is best known for its population of wild chimpanzees, made famous by the pioneering research of primatologist Jane Goodall. The park is home to several habituated chimpanzee communities, which are the subject of ongoing research and conservation efforts. In addition to chimpanzees, the park is also inhabited by other primates such as red colobus monkeys, red-tailed monkeys, and blue monkeys, as well as a variety of bird species.
Gombe Stream National Park is a birdwatcher's paradise, with
over 200 bird species recorded within its boundaries. The park's
diverse habitats, including forest, grassland, and shoreline,
support a rich diversity of birdlife, including species such as
African fish eagles, palm-nut vultures, and pied kingfishers.
Visitors to Gombe Stream National Park can also enjoy boat
safaris on Lake Tanganyika, offering opportunities to explore
the lake's crystal-clear waters, sandy beaches, and rocky
shores. Boat safaris provide excellent opportunities for
wildlife viewing, birdwatching, and swimming in the lake.
