Oldonyo Lengai, also known as Mount Oldoinyo Lengai, is an active stratovolcano located in the eastern Rift Valley of northern Tanzania, approximately 35 kilometers (22 miles) south of Lake Natron and about 145 kilometers (90 miles) northwest of Arusha. Stands at an elevation of 2,878 meters (9,442 feet) above sea level. Oldonyo Lengai is the only active volcano in the world that produces natrocarbonatite lava, a unique type of lava that is rich in sodium carbonate minerals. The lava from Oldonyo Lengai is much cooler and less viscous than typical basaltic lava, giving it a distinctive black color when it flows.
Oldonyo Lengai is a fascinating natural wonder in Tanzania,
offering visitors a chance to explore a unique geological
phenomenon and experience the cultural richness of the Maasai
people who call the region home.
